It is called Samudrika Shastra — समुद्रिक शास्त्र, "the ocean of knowledge." Its face-reading branch, Mukha Samudrika Shastra, is older than the Greek physiognomy the West inherited. It appears in the Garuda Purana and in Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita, written in the sixth century. And it rests on a single, startling idea, captured in one Sanskrit line:
मुखं दर्पणं भाग्यस्य · The face is the mirror of destiny.
Not a gimmick. A three-thousand-year-old claim that your face is not random — that it is, as the tradition puts it, your birth chart drawn in flesh and bone. Every curve, line, mole and proportion is said to carry the imprint of the nine planets, of your karma, and of the person you are becoming.
What Mukha Samudrika Shastra actually reads
