What Does a Mole on Your Face Mean? A Vedic Face Reading Guide
In the Vedic science of face reading, a mole is never just a mark on the skin. Its placement, colour and side each carry meaning. Here is what the tradition of Mukha Samudrika Shastra says about moles across the face.
For thousands of years, Indian sages studied the face as a map — a living record of a person's nature, tendencies and fortune. This science is called Mukha Samudrika Shastra, the reading of the face. Within it, a mole (in Hindi, a til) is read carefully: where it sits, what colour it is, and on which side of the face it appears all change its meaning.
Importantly, every region of the face is governed by a planet (graha). So a mole is read as a marker — it highlights an area of life the planet rules. Let us walk across the face, region by region.
Mole on the forehead
The forehead is the seat of Guru (Jupiter) and Surya (Sun) — wisdom, purpose and standing. A mole here is traditionally linked to intelligence, ambition and a capacity for leadership. A mole in the centre of the forehead is often read as a sign of a thoughtful, principled nature; toward the sides, of drive and worldly ambition.
Mole near the eyebrows
The brow area relates to Mangal (Mars) — courage, energy and decisiveness. A mole between or near the eyebrows is read as a mark of strong will and initiative. On the right brow it leans toward good fortune through effort; on the left, toward a more inward, protective strength.
Mole on the eyes or eyelids
The eyes are governed by Surya (right eye) and Chandra (Moon, left eye) — vitality and emotion. A mole near the eye is often linked to a sensitive, expressive temperament and a rich inner emotional life.
Mole on the nose
The nose is associated with Budha (Mercury) — speech, intellect and enterprise. A mole on the nose is traditionally read as a sign of a sharp mind and a gift for communication or business. On the tip, it can indicate quick wit; on the side, resourcefulness.
Mole on the cheeks
The cheeks are ruled by Shukra (Venus) — beauty, love and harmony — which is why so much of cheek-reading touches on relationships and grace.
- Right cheek: warmth, social grace, harmonious relationships — a person who is well-loved, expressive and fortunate in friendships and family life.
- Left cheek: sensitivity, inner depth and emotional richness — someone thoughtful and private, who feels things deeply.
Mole on the lips or around the mouth
The lips also carry the signature of Shukra — pleasure, taste and expression. A mole here is often linked to charm, a love of good food and conversation, and an affectionate, sociable nature.
Mole on the chin or jaw
The chin and jaw relate to Shani (Saturn) — discipline, endurance and the long view. A mole here is traditionally read as a sign of determination, patience and steadiness through life's seasons.
Does the colour and shape matter?
Yes — and the old texts are careful about it. A clear, dark, well-formed mole is generally read as more auspicious than a faint or irregular one. Size and depth of colour add emphasis to the reading.
